Instructor: Eric Mackey

Class Title: Portrait Painting

Date & Time: Tuesday, September 9 | 8:30am - 5:30pm

Number of Hours: 8 (1 Day)

Fee: $360

Class Description: In this class, we will tackle the portrait and the myriad challenges it presents to the artist, examining the various ways in which the subject can be depicted and the best method to choose for any given project.

Subjects:
• Translating reference photograph into a portrait: We will examine different starting points. Are you shooting the portrait yourself? Were you given a bad snapshot? Do you have the luxury of the subject actually posing? These initial questions will determine the fate of your portrait to a large extent, and therefore demand different approaches.
• Backgrounds: What is the sitter’s environment? This subject will be approached in the context of expressing the personality of the sitter and establishing the composition as well as the general flavor of the portrait

Activities:
• Transferring pre-prepared image to surface: Students will start with a primed artboard and a chosen image that will serve as a “blueprint” or “cartoon” for the painting. The image will be actual size (in addition, instructions will be given on how to create one’s own blueprint).  Using carbon paper, we will transfer our images to the artboard over which the painting will be made.
• Grisaille technique as underpainting: The underpainting will be demonstrated and created using a brown monotone.
• Glazing and coloring: The portrait will be literally “fleshed out” using a combination of glazing and direct painting.

Supplies to Bring: Brushes: two round brushes, two flat brushes, one fan brush. In addition, students should bring a photograph of the person they would like to paint. The photograph should be fairly well detailed and if possible, specifically shot for the class (avoid party shots, vacation pictures etc.). If this is not available, there will be reference available in the class.

Supplies Provided: Paints, glazing medium, art boards, transfer paper, pencils.
