Class Title: Realistic Murals

Date & Time: Saturday, September 13 | 8:30am – 5:30pm

Number of Hours: 8 (1 Day)

Fee: $360

Class Description: This class will outline basic mural techniques from start to finish, sharing techniques as they are demonstrated and practiced on the student’s own artboards. Participants will come away with a working knowledge of the entire process and the essential skills that can be applied to any mural project.

Subjects:
• Transferring pre-prepared image to surface: Students will start with a primed artboard and a chosen image that will serve as a “blueprint” or “cartoon” for the painting. The image will be actual size (in addition, instructions will be given on how to create one’s own blueprint).  Using carbon paper, we will transfer our images to the artboard over which the painting will be made.
• Different parts of a realistic mural require different types of problem solving, and these will be outlined in a clear explanation of the basic techniques that apply. The end result will be a finished painting that will demonstrate a basic and enhanced comprehension of techniques of creating a mural.

Activities:
• Grisaille technique as underpainting: The underpainting will be demonstrated and created using a monotone that will vary in color depending on the needs of the subject matter (e.g., brown and white for interiors or figures, blue and white for skies and water, etc.).
• Glazing and coloring: Using a combination of glazing and direct painting, the mural will take shape.
• Specific techniques including skies, water, drapery, and figures.

Supplies to Bring: Brushes: two round brushes, two flat brushes, one fan brush.

Supplies Provided: Paints, glazing medium, art boards, transfer paper, pencils.
