Class Title: French Faux Fresco

Class Description: Have you ever wanted to execute a hand painted figurative painting? Here is your chance. Students will learn how to imitate an old worn fresco technique including a hand painted figure of a horse. This is a copy of a whimsical fresco found on the walls of a French Chateau in the Loire Valley Region of France.

• Tranfer of design from small reference to large surface
• Glazing
• Light and shadow techniques

Activities:
• Use of Modern Masters water base products to crack plaster and texture the surface of the fresco.
• Choose colors to individualize the fresco and glaze accordingly.
• Learn about the definition and properties of various types of glazes.
• Under the guidance of the teacher, students will grid and draw out their design from a reference, then continue with the blocking out the base colors of the design.
• Students will learn to highlight and shade their design and figure to create depth of color and a Renaissance style to the painting.

Supplies to bring: Three artist brushes (sabeline or acrylic, 3/4” flat, #3 round, #6 round), one water soluble pencil (raw umber similar), one piece 240 grit sandpaper, 3” cheap bristle mixing brush, one roll of delicate tape (1” or approx.), one ruler or tape measure.

Supplies provided: Rollers, trays, prepared board, crackle medium, plaster medium, glaze, colorants, reference, dead flat varnish, rags, straight edge, large acrylic brushes, pie plates/trays.
