Class Description: If you want to learn the basics of trompe l’oeil or need to freshen up your skills, this is the workshop for you. This is a traditional workshop focusing on the principles of “fool of the eye”. It is designed to clarify a certain painting style and expand technical skills by practicing the fundamentals of grisaille, three-dimensional depth and illusion of architectural elements, and shadow and light.
The class begins with charcoal molding studies. The theory of shadow and light will be clearly demonstrated through essential brush exercises and enriched with an historical slide presentation of photos taken on many travels through Europe.

Subjects:
Theory of shadow and light
Tonal value as a tool to create volume
Painting technique and proper brush stroke in relation to grisaille and tromp l’oeil

Activities:
Teacher will lecture with charcoal sketch and painting medium
Transfer design
Painting base coat inside ornament
Painting six basic tones over the base coat
Use of tools -- two different sized ornamentation brushes; one blending brush
