The idea: Take a vehicle, older and classic, or brand-spanking new and soon-to-be classic, and transform its once-stock design into an original, one-of-a-kind creation that stands alone in its own right. Not simply a “concept car" but, rather, a concept that is as practical as it is striking.
Some of these works of practical art will be the models for manufacturers’ limited editions or special parts, or suppliers’ body kits, wheels, in-vehicle entertainment or navigation, interior kits, lights … the list goes on.
Restyling again brings you its long-running annual presentation of vehicles and the items that went into them to make them the special cars, trucks, SUVs and CUVs, four-wheelers and speed-demons that they are.
Throughout the next 13 pages, photos, illustrations and computer renderings of the vehicles you could see at SEMA 2009 populate this special issue. And you can read about who created what, using which manufacturer’s specific parts on these most special of specially created vehicles.
Rick Bottom, president of Rick Bottom Designs (RBD), is well known as one of the top automotive customizers in the aftermarket today. At the GM booth at 2009 SEMA Show his customized Camaro SS “2GO” will be on display. With 1,000hp under the hood, the Modern Muscle Inc.-built engine featuring a Mast Motorsports heads and cam package along with a Vortech V-7 supercharger turns go into gone! A throaty tuned exhaust and electronically controlled cutout system by No Weeds will let loose all those horses from the 6.7L stroker engine. A restyled body treatment — call it refined athleticism — creates a powerful aura while still maintaining the performance essence of the vehicle. Axiom Forged Wheels AX-502 three-piece 21" wheels will be a focal point. And Bottom has exactly what he needs from his “Bod Squad" for this year’s customized outcome. Labonte Motorsports provides a methanol/water injection system that allows the car to run on pump gas. Baer Brakes, with six-piston calipers and 15" rotors, will bring this car to a dead stop. American Racing Headers headers will flow to Corsa axle back mufflers and tips. Pedders USA is at the forefront of Camaro suspension development and has provided adjustable coil-overs, swaybars and bushings. Suspension upgrades will allow skid pad measurements more than 1.05g. while still maintaining great ride quality. Interior upgrades will include a Global Accessories Co., leather kit with embossed inserts, and a heating and cooling system. A painted trim kit and ambient lighting will make the experience more visual, while a full-roll cage keeps a safe feeling. Pounding power? An elaborate Eclipse A/V system will be installed with navigation, satellite radio, HDD radio, iPOD connectivity and Bluetooth. BASF paint products sprayed with SATA paint equipment will make an attention-getting statement; finishing it off in style will be Bottom’s signature orange pearl and carbon flash metallic paint. STS Turbo’s new ZR7 Corvette, with a 702hp option available and upgrades from front to rear, is the perfect Corvette weapon. The ZR7 knocks down an estimated 36 mpg for those road trips, while relying on the twin turbocharged torque of the 6.2L engine to produce earth-rotating force. To help transfer this power to the ground and keep the car planted in the corners, it is equipped with the same suspension setup as the Pfadt Race Engineering Corvette that won the 2008 NASA National Championship. The fully adjustable coil-over and sway bar suspension allow for complete ride control to keep the car comfortable on the city streets but rigid on the track with G’s nearing the 1.2 mark on the skid pad and pounding the quarter-mile in 10.8 seconds. The Kindig-It Design wide-body accommodates the footprint and has full race-ready functionality. The front splitter improves aerodynamics while forcing cool air through the intercooler and into the front brake cooling ducts. The ventilated hood pulls the heat out of the radiator and out of the engine bay; combined with the pro-style rear wing, it provides more down-force for added stability. The wide-body also features huge quarter-panel ducts to feed the STS Turbo twin turbochargers and cool the rear brakes. To slow down, there’s a Baer Extreme brake package with forged front and rear six-piston mono-block calipers and 14" two-piece cross-drilled rotors front and rear — and are visible through the ZR7’s exclusive three-piece forged wheels; alloy rims measure 19x9.5", front and 20x12", rear. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires, which were specifically developed for the ZR1 Corvette, measuring P285/30ZR19 up front and P335/25ZR20 out in back. The already ergonomic cockpit is upgraded with leather accent trim and a full set of gauges. Other features include a Fidanza aluminum flywheel and twin-disc clutch that reduce drive-train mass while containing the turbocharged torque and making for easy rev-matched downshifts at the track. Who all helped out? Comp Cams; HPTuners; Autometer; Palmer Performance; Hi-Tech Custom Concepts; Deatsch Werks fuel injectors; Active Radiator; Inpro tail lights; and Heat Shield Products. |
